Zoologger: First animal with ovaries on the outside

Zoologger is our weekly column highlighting extraordinary animals – and occasionally other organisms – from around the world
SpeciesAllapasus aurantiacus
Habitat: On and around the seabed off the coast of California
If there's one way we can be sure that life on Earth really is the result of evolution, and not the guiding hand of a cosmic engineer, it's the hideous design flaws. The examples are too numerous to list, but let's just consider one: human males have their testicles on the outside.
It seems they work better that way, because sperm production works best slightly below human body temperature. But it isn't half inconvenient – as any male who has ever been kicked in the goolies will tell you.
Spare a thought, then, for the newly-discovered acorn worm Allapasus aurantiacus. The females are the first animals known that have their ovaries on the outside. But according to their discoverers, they are the first of many.

Deep-sea worms

Acorn worms are quite different to the more familiar annelid worms, as they are close-ish relatives of backboned animals. They live on the sea bed, often burrowing into the sediment.
No one had noticed A. aurantiacus until June 2002, when Karen Osborn of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC spotted one via a remotely-operated vehicle deep into the Monterey Submarine Canyon off California, around 3000 metres down. Intrigued, she had it brought to the surface.
Once Osborn got a closer look she realised it was an acorn worm. Unusually large eggs, each almost 2 millimetres across, were pouring out of it. The new species belonged to a family of acorn worms called Torquaratoridae, which all live in the deep sea – unlike many acorn worms, which prefer the shallows.

Ovaries on display

Each worm has two "wings" – flaps of skin on the main body along much of its length. In an unprecedented arrangement, the ovaries are attached to the inner surfaces of these wings.
"Usually you want to protect these things, and keep them near and dear," Osborn says. Even human testicles have several layers of skin protecting them. But the eggs of A. aurantiacus are only protected by a single layer of cells. That might make it easier for sperm to reach them, Osborn says.
She has since found a few males, whose genitals are in the same place on their skin. It's not clear how they fertilise the females' eggs. One possibility is that the males release sperm into the water, whereupon the females take it in through their gills and squirt it over the ovaries – which are ideally placed by the gill outlets.

Floating free

The worm uses its wings as sticky pads to attach itself to the sea floor. "They secrete a ton of mucus, and that probably helps them adhere," Osborn says. "Mucus is a big part of their lives."
Mucus may also be the key to the worm's ability to float above the sea bed – something that only the deep-sea acorn worms do. Osborn thinks they secrete a balloon of mucus around themselves, which catches currents that then carry the worm away.
But first they have to get off the sea bed, and to do that they excrete the contents of their guts. This material acts as ballast, so getting rid of it means they drift upwards.

First of many

Osborn and her colleagues have since found over a dozen acorn worms in the same family. They all have external ovaries and the distinctive wings. One species has hermaphrodite forms, another first for acorn worms.
Worms aren't known for their parenting skills but in a further surprise, at least one species uses the wings to shelter its offspring. Osborn found a single female, of a species closely related to A. aurantiacus, that was sheltering well-developed eggs and a few larvae under its wings.
She suggests that the acorn worms' strange lifestyles are adaptations to life on the sea floor, where food and mates are scarce. In a place like that, it makes sense to move around in search of new feeding grounds, to make use of any and all sperm that comes your way, and to keep your young close until they're ready to take care of themselves.

`Oceans` acidifying at unprecedented speed

Humanity's greenhouse gas emissions may be acidifying the oceans at a faster rate than at any time in the last 300 million years. The sheer speed of change means we do not know how severe the consequences will be.
As well as warming the planet, carbon dioxide seeps into the oceans and forms carbonic acid. As a result the water becomes more acidic.
The pH is currently dropping by about 0.1 per century. This ocean acidificationharms organisms such as corals that rely on dissolved carbonate to make their shells. It also disrupts behaviour in some animals.
Bärbel Hönisch of Columbia University in Palisades, New York, and colleagues used the chemical record preserved in rocks to gauge previous ocean acidification events.
The best match for current changes was the Palaeocene-Eocene thermal maximum of 55 million years ago, when vast amounts of methane were released into the atmosphere causing rapid global warming, ocean acidification, and mass extinction. But even then, it took at least 3000 years for ocean pH to drop by 0.5. "That is an order of magnitude slower than today," Hönisch says.
The 300-million-year period that Hönisch and colleagues studied includes the biggest extinction of them all: the end-Permian extinction. This event, 252 million years ago, wiped out up to 96 per cent of marine species. But it probably had other causes.
Acidification is not the only threat to the oceans from greenhouse gases, says Nicolas Gruber of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich in Switzerland. Marine life also faces a threat from rising water temperatures andless dissolved oxygen.
"We have to think about these effects co-occurring," Gruber says. While we have information on the consequences of each individual factor, we have no idea what the combined effect will be.

100 Years of Fashion by Cally Blackman

Our coffee table is quivering under the weight of all the books we put there to look arty and sophisticated.
But rarely do we sit on our sofa with a glass of cava, and think, ‘let’s spend this evening flicking through Gombrich’s History of Art, or studying this A-Z of info graphics. Instead we use these books as coasters and turn on the TV. But one book we’ll be poring over, rather than pouring over, is Cally Blackman’s 100 Years of Fashion.
This beautiful tome deserves to be read, and by ‘read’ we mean ‘ogled’ as there are more large, lavish images than text. It starts with high society in the 1900s – a mix of illustrations, advertisements and portrait photos and goes through couturière to Garbo in the 30s, Dior’s New Look, air-raid-shelter chic, Teddy Girls, Flower Power, Hip Hop and ends, of course, with Lady Gaga.
We’ve read a lot of fashion books in our time, but we like this one as it’s full of pictures we’ve never seen before (including one of an Austrian pianist in 1912 wearing four Arctic foxes as a stole) and fantastic quotes from fashion icons. We’d buy it for the above Andy Warhol gem alone.

`David Cameron` to set minimum price for alcohol

A minimum price per unit of alcohol will be introduced in England alongside plans to ban the sale of multi-buy discount deals, the Prime Minister said today.
David Cameron said he was making "no excuses" for clamping down on the country's drink problem but admitted minimum pricing would not be "universally popular".
The move was met with opposition from the drinks industry, with some accusing Mr Cameron of being "seriously misguided".
Retailers and drinks firms said the policy was also at odds with the "responsibility deal" between alcohol companies and the Government, overseen by Health Secretary Andrew Lansley.
Mr Lansley is known to be against tighter regulation of the sector and has previously described minimum pricing as an "absurd" tool for tackling drink abuse.
Today's Alcohol Strategy is intended to "turn the tide" against irresponsible drinking, which costs the UK an estimated £21 billion a year.
It sets out plans for a minimum unit price, possibly 40p, bans the sale of multi-buy discount deals and introduces a "zero tolerance" approach to drunken behaviour in A&E departments.
It also suggests a late-night levy to get pubs and clubs to help pay for policing and improved powers to stop serving alcohol to drunks.
The Government hopes minimum pricing will spell the end of cheap white ciders, spirits and super-strength lagers.
It also believes it could tackle "pre-loading" - when people drink cheap alcohol at home before heading to a pub or nightclub.
Under the plans, buy-one-get-one-free deals could be banned but half-price deals could stay.
The Government intends to consult on the strategy over the summer with a view to introducing legislation as soon as possible.
Mr Cameron said: "Binge drinking isn't some fringe issue, it accounts for half of all alcohol consumed in this country.
"The crime and violence it causes drains resources in our hospitals, generates mayhem on our streets and spreads fear in our communities.
"My message is simple. We can't go on like this. We have to tackle the scourge of violence caused by binge drinking. And we have to do it now."
He said the Government would tackle the problem "from every angle", adding there would be a "real effort to get to grips with the root cause" of the problem.
"That means coming down hard on cheap alcohol.
"When beer is cheaper than water, it's just too easy for people to get drunk on cheap alcohol at home before they even set foot in the pub."
Mr Cameron said a minimum price would, for the first time, make it illegal for shops to sell alcohol for less than a set price per unit.
"We're consulting on the actual price, but if it is 40p that could mean 50,000 fewer crimes each year and 900 fewer alcohol-related deaths per year by the end of the decade.
"This isn't about stopping responsible drinking, adding burdens on business or some new kind of stealth tax - it's about fast immediate action where universal change is needed.
"And let's be clear. This will not hurt pubs. A pint is two units. If the minimum price is 40p a unit, it won't affect the price of a pint.
"In fact, pubs may benefit by making the cheap alternatives in supermarkets more expensive.
"Of course, I know this won't be universally popular. But the responsibility of being in Government isn't always about doing the popular thing. It's about doing the right thing."
Today's announcement from Downing Street came just after Mr Lansley made his own announcement on the responsibility deal, saying the voluntary agreement with firms "works".
He said alcohol companies and retailers had pledged to cut a billion units of alcohol from their drinks over the next few years.
"The responsibility deal shows what can be achieved for individuals and families when we work together with industry," he said.
"We know this is an ambitious challenge to work in this way but our successes so far clearly demonstrate it works."
The British Retail Consortium's food director, Andrew Opie, said minimum pricing was effectively a "tax on responsible drinkers".
He added: "David Cameron is seriously misguided.
"It's simplistic to imagine a minimum price is some sort of silver bullet solution to irresponsible drinking.
"It's a myth to suggest that supermarkets are the problem or that a pub is somehow a safer drinking environment."
Mr Opie said retailers had been "active, founding participants in the Government's own health responsibly deal".
Andrew Cowan, country director of Diageo GB, whose brands include Smirnoff, Baileys, Tanqueray and Guinness, said the move went against the Government's responsibility deal.
"Diageo has consistently supported this Government and its predecessors to tackle alcohol misuse and believes measures such as stricter law enforcement in addressing drunk and disorderly behaviour will work.
"However, the intended introduction of pricing intervention is misguided and appears to run counter to the responsibility deal set out by this Government."
He said the move would hit consumers hard, particularly those on low incomes.
"There is no credible evidence from anywhere in the world that it is an effective measure in reducing alcohol-related harm."
Henry Ashworth, chief executive of the Portman Group, which represents drinks producers, said: "For this strategy to be successful, it must not penalise the vast majority who drink responsibly or unfairly burden businesses that are helping Government tackle alcohol misuse through the responsibility deal partnership.
"It is vital that these proposals do not undermine this partnership and the good progress that is being made."
Eric Appleby, chief executive of Alcohol Concern, said: "This is a victory for common sense.
"We cannot carry on with a situation where it's cheaper to buy cans of lager than a can of Coke.
"We fully support the Government in taking action to clamp down on booze at pocket money prices and protect the health of our children and young people.
"All the research shows there is a link between price and consumption and we know that lives can be saved if a minimum price is introduced."
Professor Sir Ian Gilmore, of the Royal College of Physicians and the Alcohol Health Alliance, added: "Healthcare workers who struggle every day to cope with the impact of our nation's unhealthy drinking will welcome tough new policies in areas such as price and licensing that are based on evidence and should bring about real benefits."
Chief Constable Jon Stoddart, the Association of Chief Police Officers' lead on alcohol, said: "Week in, week out in town centres across the country the police have to deal with the consequences of cheap alcohol and irresponsible drinking.
"I welcome the Government's new approach that will help reduce the availability of cheap alcohol, give communities a greater say over licensing in their area and reduce pressure on the police."

`Kim Kardashian` pelted with flour

Kim Kardashian has been flour-bombed on the red carpet.
The 31-year-old reality star was promoting her new fragrance True Refection at The London Hotel in West Hollywood on Thursday night when an unidentified woman pelted her with white powder.
Dressed in a black blazer, leather trousers and an electric blue blouse, Kim's hair and entire back were covered by what firefighters later found to be cooking powder.
According to TMZ.com, security guards took her to a private room where she brushed herself down before choosing to return to the event.
Talking to E! News, the shocked star said: "That probably is the craziest, unexpected, weird thing that ever happened to me.
"Like I said to my makeup artist, I wanted more powder and that's a whole lot of translucent powder right there."
But little sister Khloe, 27, does not find the incident quite so funny. She tweeted: "I wish I was with my sister tonight. I bet you that woman wouldn't have dared tried a thing ..."
According to the US website, the woman tried to flee but was held by Kim's press officer. Los Angeles police have confirmed Kim declined to press charges but a non-criminal battery report was still filed before the woman was released.
Kim's best friend Jonathan Cheban almost fell victim to a similar fate when someone tried to flour him in the face as he walked with Kim in New York last December.
Referring to Kim's estranged husband Kris Humphries - who she filed for divorce from after just 72 days of marriage in October - the person is said to have shouted: 'This is for Kris Humphries!"
Kris subsequently denied any involvement and Jonathan told US Weekly: "I think it's pathetic that someone would go to this length to show their support for someone. With fans like that, who needs enemies?"
