Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ split was announced on Friday 29th June at 6pm. It was reported that Katie had filed for divorce a few days before in New York claiming “irreconcilable differences” with her husband of five years.
And while it seemed to have come out of the blue, those close to the couple have known that their marriage has been over for some time. And heat has learned that the announcement of their split was a matter of timing for both Tom and Katie.
Tom didn't know
Katie released her own statement on Friday night – and our insider claims that Tom had not been consulted as to when the news would break. “Tom had been expecting Katie to come to Iceland for his 50th birthday on Tuesday,” says our top source. “But she wanted to announce the split. She didn’t want to have to put on a show for the cameras. She knew she had to file for divorce and announce it before his birthday.”
Now the couple are going to thrash out the division of their assets, though our source claims Katie isn’t focused on money. According to reports the couple are worth $275million together, and thanks to a sturdy pre-nuptial agreement Katie is entitled to only $15million as well as the couple’s $35million Beverly Hills mansion.
Our source added that Katie isn’t looking for anymore. “The money is not important – she just wants custody of Suri [six]. She’ll sell the house, Katie thinks it’s too big anyway and she wants somewhere where she can start afresh. She’ll get a smaller place in LA and an apartment in New York too.”
